5 things that nobody tells you about when you become a Mum!

1. Your hair falls out!

I'm not sure if it happens to everyone but apparently the changes in your hormones can cause all kinds of weird stuff to go on and one of those things is that your hair falls out. I'm not just talking a little bit here. A LOT!! I have a lot of hair anyway but everyday i brush my hair  now and a rather alarming amount is in my hairbrush. It is also getting everywhere and on everything in my house and on my clothes *sigh*. I mean it's not like you had enough weird body stuff to deal with already... oh wait! You do!

2. You never really knew the concept of 'Tired' before.

I'm an Early Childhood Teacher so I used to be pretty tired before becoming a Mum. I used to come home from work somedays and go to bed at like 8 o''clock because I worked shifts and somedays I was just really physically drained. Those tiny humans can really take it out of you!

Then I became a Mum....Being a Mum is a new level of tired. You're so tired you leave your keys in the fridge, you're so tired you can't cook toast, you're so tired you just curl up next to your baby and have a nap somedays because Hey!  'sleep when your baby sleeps' is pretty damn great advice.

3. You will probably still be in pain for weeks, months or even years afterwards (but hopefully not years!)

I had a pretty crazy and non typical birth story so I might have pain and swelling and inflammation for a lot longer than the average person (which I totally get). However, I’ve been reading a lot online about how long it really takes for your body to heal. The average woman take a minimum of 9- 12 months to heal fully after the birth of your baby.

THAT IS SOMETHING NOBODY TELLS YOU!! I guess if they took nine months to grow it makes sense that it takes 9 months to recover. Yikes!

4. You find joy in tiny things...

I used to get upset about silly little things before like someone at work hadn't ordered the paint I needed or remembered to bring their readings to a meeting. Those things seem so silly now... Looking back on the types of things that stressed me out were just pretty tiny and insignificant.

Since becoming a Mum I've gained some pretty great perspective on the simplicity of things. I think because I was so unwell and in so much pain after my birth I gained some real  perspective on whats important in life. There is so much love and joy to be found everyday if you look for it. Stop getting hung up on the small things like having to empty a rubbish bin again or wash MORE clothes and instead why not try to start enjoying those little tasks?

Mindfulness is incredibly effective and it helps me to stay positive in those moments of stress.

5. When your baby smiles and giggles at you it's all worth it!

Greening our parenting: Some tips that could help you on your journey (Part 1).

I’ve been working on this post for a really long time now and it’s just been getting longer and longer! Tonight I realised that’s because caring for the environment is actually something I’ve become pretty passionate about! I’ve got so much I want to share that I’ve decided to make it into two blog posts. Part 1 is all about sustainable consuming and Part 2 about creating our edible garden. I think what I love about is the fact that we are making small changes in our daily lives but these things can add up to having a big and lasting impact on our earth. I’ll be the first to admit that we are definitely no ‘zero waste’ household but we have made a few choices that I’m pretty proud of this year and here’s a little summary of ways we are trying to ‘Green our parenting’ and lessen our impact and footprint on our beautiful earth. 1. We use cloth nappies Not MORE washing I hear you groan!! Are you crazy?! Yes, it is more washing but the pay off is well worth it in my mi...

Reusable nappies: Saving the world one little bum at a time

When I found out I was having our little boy I was excited about the prospect of using reusable nappies instead of disposables. I've seen them being used in centres I've worked at and I was hopeful in doing my little bit for the environment. With all the media coverage at the moment around plastic and the damage it's doing (and this past month being plastic free July) I got motivated to try and go 100 percent reusable. It's a learning curve It's taken us a while to get there because like everything in motherhood- there's a learning curve. We started out by trying some of " The Nappy Ladies " recommendations when our baby was about 4 or 5 months old. I had three different types and every one of them seemed to leak on us. I got pretty disheartened and was about to give up when a friend of mine suggested I watch some Youtube tutorials. Great suggestion! Turns out I was putting two out of the three on wrong (the leg holes weren't done up tight en...

Yoga: How it's been helping me

I'm the first person to pled scepticism when it comes to fitness. I'm not fit at the moment by any means and I honestly haven't really been properly fit since I was a competitive swimmer in my preteens. That's a bit sad to say the least because there once was a day when I loved sports especially swimming. That is not my current status but I'd like it to be. New hobby that's paying off: A couple of weeks ago I started doing some morning Yoga classes on YouTube. I had no idea how I would go or if I'd enjoy it but I'm pleased to say I really am! I've been making it part of our daily routine. I get up, eat breakfast, give baby boy his milk, have a shower and then yoga for 15-20 mins. Or basically as long as I can get through before Mr wriggles gets upset or needs a cuddle. I'm finding so much pleasure in the simple practice of breathing and movement. The bonus for me is I'm losing weight! I figure if I can go through what I've been through ...
