Mum rant: Judgemental people

I've decided to start a new series in my blog called Mum Rant. It's basically just me having a bit of a rant about something that has upset me recently and which I'd like to get off my chest. I also thought it might be amusing or entertaining at least for those of you are are currently going through challenges of being a new parent.

So here goes Rant #1 in what I predict to be a lengthy series.

Today I was doing my grocery shopping with baby boy aka my 'sweet little man'. Everything was going along swimmingly or seemingly until I reached the frozen goods isle. I had given my sweet little man a packet of chippies to play with (don't worry they were a closed packet). He loves the sounds and sensations of new textures at the moment and so this had kept him amused pretty much the entire half an hour trip around the supermarket- winning! That was until the frozen foods isle where I meet a very rude old lady. She looked around to the crinkly noises of my little babies hands on said metal chippie packet only to look down her nose and give me a disapproving head shake.

Dear rude old lady,

I would like to inform you that I had about 5 hours sleep last night and that was 5 hours of INTERRUPTED sleep. I'm happy to be well enough to even get out to the shops and I get a massive sense of completion by writing my little list each week and getting all of our items. I would like you to please cast your memory back to when you were a new Mum. When you were tired and sore and just doing your best each day for your little family. I would like to urge you to please leave your judgemental head shakes that you seem to give out willingly to new mums or anyone for that matter at home (with your sad cat).

Sincerely,

A new mum making it the best she can!

Greening our parenting: Some tips that could help you on your journey (Part 1).

I’ve been working on this post for a really long time now and it’s just been getting longer and longer! Tonight I realised that’s because caring for the environment is actually something I’ve become pretty passionate about! I’ve got so much I want to share that I’ve decided to make it into two blog posts. Part 1 is all about sustainable consuming and Part 2 about creating our edible garden. I think what I love about is the fact that we are making small changes in our daily lives but these things can add up to having a big and lasting impact on our earth. I’ll be the first to admit that we are definitely no ‘zero waste’ household but we have made a few choices that I’m pretty proud of this year and here’s a little summary of ways we are trying to ‘Green our parenting’ and lessen our impact and footprint on our beautiful earth. 1. We use cloth nappies Not MORE washing I hear you groan!! Are you crazy?! Yes, it is more washing but the pay off is well worth it in my mi...

Amazing babies and why sleeping through the night is not everything.

Today after getting a pretty good sleep for the first time in months I looked down at my sweet boy all covered in mushy weetbix and half chewed pieces of watermelon and I thought Woah! How crazy is this? I made you! You are half me and half the person who I love the most in this world but hang on… now you are the person who I love the most in this world. Amazing babies It might sound silly but it was a bit of an eureka moment for me. I’ve been so tired lately. I mean dead tired, crazy, living zombie kinda tired that I think i’d forgotten how amazing this tiny human sitting in front of me truly is. He’s so smart, cuddly, curious and smiley. Full of boundless energy and games galore. He loves his truck book, pulling himself up on EVERYTHING, smiling at strangers in the supermarket and chewing on my hair. He can climb the 18 stairs in our house and does it at every chance he gets, he can remember where all his toys are even though he moves them around throughout the day. He likes ...

Reusable nappies: Saving the world one little bum at a time

When I found out I was having our little boy I was excited about the prospect of using reusable nappies instead of disposables. I've seen them being used in centres I've worked at and I was hopeful in doing my little bit for the environment. With all the media coverage at the moment around plastic and the damage it's doing (and this past month being plastic free July) I got motivated to try and go 100 percent reusable. It's a learning curve It's taken us a while to get there because like everything in motherhood- there's a learning curve. We started out by trying some of " The Nappy Ladies " recommendations when our baby was about 4 or 5 months old. I had three different types and every one of them seemed to leak on us. I got pretty disheartened and was about to give up when a friend of mine suggested I watch some Youtube tutorials. Great suggestion! Turns out I was putting two out of the three on wrong (the leg holes weren't done up tight en...
