Coffee no milk please.... My experience with a post pregnancy food intolerance

Hey lovely people! Merry Christmas and sorry I’ve been away from my blog for so long. I haven’t really got a good reason for why it’s been so long between posts oh wait... yes I do! I have a very busy little man who has just started crawling! He’s been into everything and just generally exhausting me. Crawling has actually been a pretty exciting and a fun adventure for both of us. It’s really transformed my days because he’s so much busier and happier. He seems to spend much longer periods of time exploring his world and happily playing. I love how he can reach a lot more things now and make discoveries himself through his play. It’s meant I have a bit more freedom too because he’s a lot less grizzly and frustrated- hooray!

I’ve been thinking about this post for awhile now and hope that it sheds some light on a not that common Mum topic.

Food intolerances post pregnancy...

I’ll be the first person to admit that I didn’t really believe a lot of the hype around food intolerances before I developed one. Obviously allergies are different to intolerances because there has always been people who are allergic to things like nuts or eggs etc but I never knew you could develop food intolerances over your lifetime and I never knew pregnancy could have something to do with it.

Let me explain ...

Since having my little boy I’ve become intolerant to dairy. I’ve found a little bit is ok but not a whole lot or even quarter of a glass of milk in my tea is too much! It’s so weird and pretty annoying. I used to be a big milk drinker, I had it on my breakfast everyday, I’d only drink coffee and tea with milk and I’d put lashings of whipped cream on everything and anything if it was there but now when I have milk or cream I get violently ill within half an hour or so. I keep thinking it will go away but it still hasn’t and it’s coming up on 8 months. It’s just another thing that people don’t tell you about post pregnancy. I guess a lot of people might not know about it or might not experience any so that could be apart of it. I wanted to post this story about it to raise a bit of awareness really and also to let people know that dairy is delicious but maybe it’s not so essential in an adult diet? Just something to think about..

I’ve recently been taking a bit of a break from gluten as well and trying to focus on mostly whole, fresh foods that are easily digested . I’ve been feeling a lot better, with more energy but still not 100 percent 😢 Hopefully it’s wont be the rest of my life because I really do love soft cheese and milkshakes!! I’ve been reading a lot about it online and if your interested or think you might have a sensitivity or intolerance this website might help. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lactose-intolerance/symptoms-causes/syc-20374232

Some research seems to suggest its to do with immune system suppression that can occur during pregnancy and other people think it’s to do with your hormones not equalising fast enough. I have no idea what cuased it really but it’s not all bad though! I’ve discovered that I really like almond milk and there’s a lot of great milk replacements. I’ve also lost about 5 kgs or more so I’m taking that as a win. Loose jeans and a happier tummy can only be a good thing!

Greening our parenting: Some tips that could help you on your journey (Part 1).

I’ve been working on this post for a really long time now and it’s just been getting longer and longer! Tonight I realised that’s because caring for the environment is actually something I’ve become pretty passionate about! I’ve got so much I want to share that I’ve decided to make it into two blog posts. Part 1 is all about sustainable consuming and Part 2 about creating our edible garden. I think what I love about is the fact that we are making small changes in our daily lives but these things can add up to having a big and lasting impact on our earth. I’ll be the first to admit that we are definitely no ‘zero waste’ household but we have made a few choices that I’m pretty proud of this year and here’s a little summary of ways we are trying to ‘Green our parenting’ and lessen our impact and footprint on our beautiful earth. 1. We use cloth nappies Not MORE washing I hear you groan!! Are you crazy?! Yes, it is more washing but the pay off is well worth it in my mi...

Reusable nappies: Saving the world one little bum at a time

When I found out I was having our little boy I was excited about the prospect of using reusable nappies instead of disposables. I've seen them being used in centres I've worked at and I was hopeful in doing my little bit for the environment. With all the media coverage at the moment around plastic and the damage it's doing (and this past month being plastic free July) I got motivated to try and go 100 percent reusable. It's a learning curve It's taken us a while to get there because like everything in motherhood- there's a learning curve. We started out by trying some of " The Nappy Ladies " recommendations when our baby was about 4 or 5 months old. I had three different types and every one of them seemed to leak on us. I got pretty disheartened and was about to give up when a friend of mine suggested I watch some Youtube tutorials. Great suggestion! Turns out I was putting two out of the three on wrong (the leg holes weren't done up tight en...

Yoga: How it's been helping me

I'm the first person to pled scepticism when it comes to fitness. I'm not fit at the moment by any means and I honestly haven't really been properly fit since I was a competitive swimmer in my preteens. That's a bit sad to say the least because there once was a day when I loved sports especially swimming. That is not my current status but I'd like it to be. New hobby that's paying off: A couple of weeks ago I started doing some morning Yoga classes on YouTube. I had no idea how I would go or if I'd enjoy it but I'm pleased to say I really am! I've been making it part of our daily routine. I get up, eat breakfast, give baby boy his milk, have a shower and then yoga for 15-20 mins. Or basically as long as I can get through before Mr wriggles gets upset or needs a cuddle. I'm finding so much pleasure in the simple practice of breathing and movement. The bonus for me is I'm losing weight! I figure if I can go through what I've been through ...
