I recently read this beautiful article published in the local Porse Magazine about why me time is vital. It spoke about the importance of self love and really stuck a chord with me. I think until you've been through mental health issues you don't realise the seriousness of taking that time for just you and not feeling guilty about it. I used to often give a lot of myself in my job to the children, to the teachers and to the parents. Supporting them, lifting them up with kindness and positive words but then go home and feel deflated, tired and sad myself.
Today is the first of October and that marks the start of Mental Health Awareness month here in New Zealand. I think it is the perfect time for me to tell you that from my own personal experience with mental health it's never too late to start taking care of your mind.
Theres so much hype at the moment around taking care of your body and focusing on healthy food choices and I think that movement is awesome and totally vitally needed but what I'm more concerned about is our beautiful peoples mental state. It is my personal view that too many people are overworked, stressed, anxious or nervous and I think when you're in those dark places sometimes its hard to even see it yourself until you're out of it.
One thing that helps me a lot over the years is deep breathing exercises. It sounds silly but it really works and it helps me to stay calm and positive in every aspect of my life not just my job or my current mum life (which can be immensely stressful!).
I think sometimes people are scared of trying out new things to do with their mental state and I completely understand that! Your mind is scary place or it can be but whats more scary is living a life in fear or anxiety. No one needs to feel like that long term and I can honestly say there is always a way through it and a person to talk to who will understand (even if you feel like there isn't).
I've suffered from anxiety a lot in my life but it wasn't until the last few weeks of my pregnancy that I really recognised how bad it had gotten. It was stopping me from doing things i loved and stopping me from going out places. I'm proud to say that I'm now in such a happy, calm place and that is because I have started recognising those feelings and taking deep breaths or walking a way when I feel stressed or upset then returning and reassessing when I've calmed down.
I've also been using this app daily called "Simple Habit". Its a mediation app that has experienced councillors and psychologists who talk you through little exercises each day. They teach you things like graduate, happiness techniques, mindfulness and heaps of other things all for free.
Give it a go! all you've got to lose is stress and worry.
